It's extraordinary how a negative comment (or one perceived as such) holds so 
much power, when a hundred compliments go forgotten.

Think of your local waving and encouraging motorists and remember how much 
respect is paid to you. 

All winter long, mine is the only bicycle locked to the bike racks outside 
work. Some of the employees disapprove of my choice "you must be able to afford 
a car by now" etc., but others solicit advice on what bike they should buy so 
they can start riding. In the first instance if the tone is not hostile, I can 
explain how the ride home clears the stress of the day. For the folk asking 
advice - I try to avoid giving any! I do point out the benefits of wider tires 
and neutral riding position, but beyond that try to be non-committal. I am 
encouraged by the interest though.
