Tom,

Have you tried a Shimano 9 speed Sora? Available as a double or triple. I 
have one of these (double) on a frame and it works fine. Friction shifting 
7 cogs with a 46x34 in the front. Mine is shimmed but so far no issues. The 
number of front and rear derailers on the market today is indeed staggering.

To Pam's point I'm sure others on the list can point you to some vintage 
derailers that will work for you.
