Venturing Crew 999 went on an overnight/biking trip to Grant Ranch.
Some arrived by car, others by bike. Those crazy enough to biked with
me to Grant Ranch climbed over 1000 feet of elevation over San Jose.
They were constantly lied too about how much further it was till we
descended, not because I wanted to give them false hope, but because I
totally forgot how long the road was. Mr.Smith and Mrs. Salcedo drove
the rest of the venturers to set up camp ahead of us. At camp we had
burgers, hot dogs, pork meat balls and the classic camping food of all
time, Balut! For those not familiar, Balut is a Filipino dish, which
is basically fetal duck egg. The next day the crew took shuttle runs
to the top of Mt. Hamiliton and rode bikes down from the top with
Mr.Taube and Mr.Smith. For those biking down 4000+ feet of elevation
topping over 30+ mph they needed nerves of steel and amazing
coordination to make it down in one piece. On the way back home those
daring went with on a mountain biking trail back to LCPA with me.
Starting from the park entrance I took them up Halls Valley Trail,
then taking Washburn Trail down. Plenty of climbing and bumpy
descents, mixed in with a couple of spills made it a life changing
moment for the three young men that joined me. Despite the big focus
on biking, it was more of a bonding experience for themselves, to see
how much they can push their bodies and minds to that limit and to go
further. This is the type of learning that can't be taught in a
classroom!Congrats and thanks goes to all the advisors and venturers
who made the trip amazing! Also big thanks to Mr.Rodriguez, Mr.Smith
and Cycles of Change for loaning bikes for the trip!
