FS: Hubbuhubbuh medium tandem, complete: well sorted w lights, rack; $2900
We LOVE this tandem. We’re an experienced tandem couple, 25+ years of tandeming (and long time Riv owners; I’ve had many Rivs, currently only a fixed gear Roadini though; my wife has one of the first runs of the Glorius mixte; and though I’m not much of a poster here, I have been a member for years, with the occasional comment). The only thing this tandem DOESNT have for us, is separability; we looked into having couplers retrofit, but then figured better to start over, so that’s what we did. And since we’re downsizing, unfortunately can only keep one tandem in the mix. So…this Hubbuhubbuh is for sale; it’s had many configurations, which you can see in the photos; mostly bars and drivetrain changes. Bars: current setup— Jones bars in front, North Roads for the stoker. Other bars: our ‘favorite’ bars for this tandem were/are Sycip single bars; the Jones is exactly the same, except with the added front part, for a more forward/dropped position. I mostly ride in drops on singles, so had a wide drop bar on there (you can see in some of the photos), I liked that too, but the Jones bars allow a lot more variation, which on a tandem (for me) is crucial . Changing the stoker bars to North Roads, made it a lot easier for my wife to stand, especially uphill, hence that change, so she too gave up the Sycips. We can send it with whatever bars you think you’d like. Gearing Rear cassette, from Riv, a newish Shimano 8 speed 12 - 40; crankset = 40 / 52, vintage Dura Ace [when we had the silver 3x, it was 26/36/46 w a 36 big in the rear; changed the 46 to a 48, then a 54 which was ideal but not great for shifting]. So as set up we get a 1:1; lower was overkill even on 15% grades…too spinny, even when loaded. And the silver triple didn’t have enough high end for us, so we changed it up, at first with just a bigger chainring (54) on the silver crank but then a different front crank; we think the current setup is as versatile, but without the extra chainring. We ride mostly in the Berkshires, in Western Mass, so there’s a lot of steep dirt here (dirt, ie ‘gravel’), the 40 x 40 is plenty of a stump puller. And we’re heavy, 355 combined, plus the bike, plus gear. Brakes: Paul Motolites…we had a number of other VBrakes, and also Paul Cantis; the motolite is the best. I changed the rear brake to use the rear disk, because i found i wasn’t really using it as a drag brake very much (it had been set up with a 3rd thumb shifter, but 2 levers = easier; and it’s still usable as a drag brake; esp w the Paul levers, not tiring to hold it lightly to scrub speed on long downhills. There are some 3-5 mile descents here, esp in the Catskills). Rear disc = Avid BB6 and a big rotor. Wheels: Son dynamo front, 36 hole Velocity Tandem rear, 40 hole Rims: Atlas Lights: Schimdt Edelux 2, chrome; rear = B&M rack toplight Rack: Nitto R-15 rear rack, which with a few bends, is actually a great and stable rack on this. a note on front racks…we’ve had a few on here…even though they bolt up super nice, i prefer the handling without a rack on the front. American Flyer rear seatpost, but will also send with original 1 bolt seatpost. Saddle: we used a wide Brooks sprung on the back (many photos show this); right now, has a SqLab seat SQlab 602 Ergolux 2.0, which my stoker now prefers; and a WTB Bolt on the front, which is my saddle of choice (i can include a b17 if you’d prefer) Pedals: Meat Locks…these are no frills but, they’re solid platform pedals. Rear derailler - Deore 9 speed FD - IRD (works fine w a triple, or double) Paul thumbies, with Shimano 9 speed lever for rear, Silver shifter for front (and i will send the proper matching shifter if you care. It was a ‘temporary solution’ which i planned to straighten out the next time i changed a cable) Tires: WTB Horizons, with tubes. We used to have the brown sidewall ones, but currently have the black ones on; lots of tread left. \ Fenders - SKS, currently not mounted, but will include if you wish Cartop rack - we have 2 yakima cartop racks, if you want one (or both), can be included for the cost of shipping And finally, some random tandem comments. We’ve had Santana Tandems(2 of them), a Schwinn Paramount, and a French constructeur-ish tandem, late 60s. Fit is everything; I’m 6’, and my wife is 5’4”, but with a very long torso / short legs (or as i learned to say, ‘well endowed in the torso).So fit for her was always a problem with most tandems; this bike is a great fit for me, and was almost perfect for her. If the stoker has, ahem, “normal” legs and/or is taller than 5’ 4”…it’s a great fit, esp with a long seatpost; i rode this often with my son who is also 6’ (and i’ve spent some time as stoker with him as pilot).
