My kid very much uses her bike as a tool as well. As for lights, I was 
already talking about having a buddy lace that existing clem wheel with a 
dyno hub over the winter. We went out for a ride the other night and took 
one of my daughter's friends, so I set her up with lights, only to find out 
that MY KID had let her lights die weeks prior. Things like this don't seem 
to cross her mind, and it'd make me feel better knowing she doesn't have to 
worry about it.
