Only difference between 5-9 and higher speeds is space between the rings.  
I use many cranks with higher "speed" drivetrains with no ill effects.  
Setting up a FD is non-trivial.  I'd recommend removing it entirely and 
reinstalling from scratch using Park Tools instructions
