consider myself a masher, but to me a "moderate spin" is much lower than 
that. My preferred cadence is closer to 90 RPM :)

Anyways, everything else you said is sound logic in terms of 38T x 29" 
wheels vs 34T x 27.5" and probably not needing to zip around town at more 
than 25 mph. But... a 10T gap on a double seems like too close of a step to 
me :)
