If the XC Pro worked as a triple with the 122.5 mm spindle, it ought to
work just fine with the big ring replaced with a bash guard, since the
middle and inner rings don’t move.

I converted my 2010 Sam from 46-36-24 to BB Bashguard-38-24 by simply
replacing the rings. I messed neither with bb spindle nor with front
derailleur (lovely LX) except for adjusting the outer throw screw. After
all, if the setup shifted the 36-to-24 fine before, it should shift the
38-to-24 just as well — as in fact it did.

The Stronglight units from PJW are value champions, at least if Richard is
referring to the inexpensive one that I bought. I did replace the plastic
cups with leftover Shimano cups.
