Consider all the kinds of cycling that one could do on a Rivendell Sam Hillborne. Then consider all the kinds of cycling that one could do on that Trek 520. Put them in a Venn diagram. It's pretty much a circle, isn't it? Sure the Hillborne has a lower BB, and a more laid back STA, and lugs and a cream head-tube. Maybe a bit longer chain stays, but that 520 is a pretty darn evolved all road machine for an exceptional price.
I especially like the down tube shifter bosses mounted WAY WAY up the down tube. That's unique and uniquely cool. It would still be a long reach if one needs the bars way up there, but if the bars are coming down, they are right there.
