Jumping in here to say that I have veloce 9 speed levers shifting a 7 speed
s-ride 13-34 cassette via a shimano xtr m-900 rear derailleur. I couldn't
get it to work without an alternative cable clamping, but the cable anchor
washer on the xtr mech didn't have the necessary `tab.' I found a washer
with a `claw' and routed the cable between the two notches, giving me just
enough reduced cable pull for the indexing to work...

Sort of. When I set the indexing so that the last two clicks in the pull
are dummy gears, things didn't feel right in my middle gear, especially
when in my smaller ring up front. I reduced the cable tension enough so
that the first and last clicks are now the dummies, and things seem to be
working quite well. We'll see if it continues to work smoothly after a
couple of rides.

I don't know if anyone else has run into this issue, namely that the cable
pull is not consistent across the range. Henry Wildeberry had a similar
issue <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGaIBUDbVKc>, and fixed it by filing
down the internal cable barrel. Hopefully I won't have to go that far!
