The Suntour derailleurs were fabulous in terms of durability, and in the shifting benefits that come from a derailleur that remains solid in its various pivots. One retrofit that I recall making, "back in the day," was to replace the upper jockey wheel of a Suntour derailleur with a floating Shimano jockey. The float in that upper wheel is crucial in compensating for the changing chain angle as one goes through the gears, and results in a much smoother/quieter drivetrain.
