On Friday afternoon we checked out the Sea Otter Classic and all the booths in the expo. Normal road and mountain bike racing stuff, but a few cool items like wooden bikes. No "Riv" stuff on this kind of shows. My son had a great time collecting goodies and freebies from the different booths and I confirmed I really have everything I really need, not that it will change what I still want... :-) On Saturday morning my son and I rode from Seaside where we were staying, all the way to almost the entrance to 17 mile drive. We rode on the Coastal Trail until it ended and then on the road until it turned inland. It was foggy and windy and sunny and very nice. I rode my Homer and he rode his steel Giant ($300) that he uses to ride to school. Out and back it was about 16 miles and he was pretty tired when we got back. In the afternoon the three of us went to the Fisherman's Wharf to walk the trail and later had a very nice dinner. On Sunday my son wasn't feeling like another ride, so I rode north from Seaside by myself on the Coastal Trail to Marina and back. I like this stretch a lot better as it is more rugged and less populated. There are some sidetrips to be taken on the dirt and sand to the beaches and there is a second section of wide pavement that I used to return that makes a very nice ride and allows one to take the detours to the beaches and so on. The Homer's fit has been adjusted with a Berthoud Touring saddle and a 7cm Technomix Deluxe stem and now the fit is as perfect as I can get it. I also fine tuned the yoke height on the Racer brakes for more MA and they felt wonderful as well. Other "insignificant" but important to me details are that on Sunday was the very first time the XXL Musa knickers fit and my first ride with no padded shorts since I was a kid in high school. To my amazed surprise, I was more comfortable on Sunday with the Musa knickers and regular underwear than I was on Saturday on padded baggy shorts. I think I've turned another page and now my all too large padded shorts stock is going to be donated rather than replenished with smaller sizes. A happy fellow that made me! This morning I commuted to work on the Musa knickers as well and again, was surprised at how comfortable I was and how "non-irritated" my skin feels. It was also the first morning commute where I didn't need a vest and lamb-skin full gloves. The temperature was 55 - 57 and my NZ wool zip T and a jersey on top were all I needed. Spring is here in the Bay Area, with an expected 70 or so by the time I leave the office and head back home.
