I think installing metal fenders used to be a lot more involved a few
years back as they didn't come pre-drilled for the stays. I've
installed Berthouds and SKS fenders multiple times and have no
problems with either. If I'm riding off road I actually prefer the SKS
because they are shorter. I live in Portland, commute by bike
literally everyday and have no problems or complaints about the SKS
fenders on my commuter. All that said... the metal fenders do look
nicer. My rando bike has VO aluminum fenders and they look nice,
provide great coverage and seem to be made well enough. The person
that built the frame actually installed the fenders for me and made
some changes to them (using two eyebolts on the rear fender as opposed
to one) and added a custom front leather flap that is installed in a
trick way I don't know how to describe.

I actually have a pair of SKS/Berthoud fenders laying around that I
purchased from Peter White. I guess they don't make them anymore. I'll
probably install them on one of my bikes this fall. I'm kind of
surprised this model wasn't more widely available.
