Hi David, I used the Surly chain tensioner and was not terribly impressed with it -- it's a fairly simple component, so all I really ask is that it just works. I had lots of little issues with it. The biggest problem was that the "floating pulley" bar (for lateral adjustment) kept loosening up, no matter how hard I'd tighten it down. Eventually the pulley bar actually fell off during a ride, which is not a good position to find yourself in. I partially blame myself for continuing to use a part that wasn't working right, but still...
Anyway, just my limited experience. If you don't need the extra lateral adjustment, the Shimano looks like a better option, but I haven't used it.
