I have a Cross-Check setup with Sturmey-Archer Drums front and back (the 90mm XL versions). I'd say the brakes work about as well as anything else, but I haven't tried them on any really long, really steep roads (can't climb up them anyway with the 5-speed hub).
They make cable routing a little more tricky, but they sure do look cool.
