I've been riding my Riv Road since 1995. It still looks good from a distance, but it has never been repainted and has more chips and scratches in the paint than I can count. If that's all that keeps you from owning the bike you really want (i.e finances are not a barrier) then get over the fear of cosmetic damage. Life's too short.
