I use a 107 with my Sugino cranks and yes the inner ring can get close but you want that......it allows better alignment with the small chain ring and large rear cog. You are safe regardless as long as your front deraileur works and you get no rubbing on the chain stay. On my old Raleigh I had about 2mm clearance and that was enough.
