Re:  Ultegra RD - one of my buddies replaced his 9 speed 12-27 cassette 
with an 11-32 (also 9 speed).  He has a short cage Ultegra that clears the 
32 (whodda thunk?).  The crankset is Ultegra racing triple so he has to 
keep track of where he is but has no problems.  He's been running this for 
a couple of years.  His bike is STI so he's constrained by what Shimano 
allows.  

FD:  Bicycle Quarterly had an article about "how front derailers work" or 
similar title.  In Shimano's case, there are details of the cage based on 
the chainring sizes.  So even if by a bit of luck your FD had enough 
travel, if it's intended for a 36 & 50, it may less reliable with a triple 
with smaller rings.

Safest bet (unless you like to mess with this stuff: lots of us do) is to 
just do the whole works.
