To me, they only look weird because it's a new idea.  Considering the 
number of upright bar users, this is the same thing with the addition of 
some forward extensions.  I have Origin 8 spacebars on my MTB / utility 
bike.  While fine for most things, I do find myself wanting something more 
forward on long climbs.  The bars feel like they are underneath me and 
something forward would be more natural.  Seems an intriguing idea.  

Does anyone make custom handlebars, i.e., "bend to your clever idea"?
