Indeed. Surface matters. I've had paved hills I've had to walk up when 
loaded, but never a spun out rear wheel. Loose dirt, absolutely a different 
experience. I've walked hills I would otherwise make it up either because 
of spinning rear wheel or ruts, roots, rocks I simply am too unskilled to 
navigate at minimal climbing speed. Like you, I gage hills by surface, 
steepness, technical obstacles, length, and altitude. a 10% grade above 
10,000 feet elevation is equal to a 14% grade at 8,000 feet for me. And 
when the climb is measured in miles rather than "see the top," I have to 
keep effort aerobic or I'll never make it.
