Outside of Portland, to the west, is the Banks-Vernonia Linear Trail. Rail trail, and a gem. Drive out to Banks (Hwy26-Hwy6, Banks is first exit on Hwy 6, I think). Drive to the north end of Banks, trailhead is on your left. 21 miles to Vernonia. Stop at Black Bear Coffee for a leisurely pause (good coffee and food). Then ride back. Paved the whole way. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lynnefitz/sets/72157632680421339/
