I did actually did the same thing myself for years on a 26" (steel) hardtail.
I've got that bike stashed in my in-laws' basement in New Hampshire, where I'm going next week. It's got 32mm SMPs on it at the moments and I'm planning on riding the s**t out of it. Not sure why I thought 29"' might be any different. Maybe the garish colors.
