So many options... Camping by car, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot? How far
away would still be considered "near"? And, what's your tolerance for
not-quite-legal campsites?

Sam P. Taylor is a CA State Park on the road out to Point Reyes from San
Rafael, very nice for car camping. There are primitive walk-in backcountry
sites in Point Reyes proper, you will need reservations at high times like
summer. And you can find dozens of small discreet spots along trails and
fire roads, like Bolinas Ridge, if you're careful about minimizing your
visibility. But rangers do patrol and issue citations, and a campfire will
give away your location.
