 I'm intrigued about your Trek 650B project, I've just about wrapped up my 
own... a 1982 715 (85% certain of the model) that now sports 650B wheels 
and 42mm Hetres (extra legre!).  I ride the bike a ton for commuting and 
recreation and just did some mixed offroad gravel stuff a couple weeks ago 
where the fat tires showed there worth.  Two things I'm considering now are 
getting a frame builder to 'dimple' the chain stays giving me a bit more 
clearance for the fat rubber, and also looking at the fork rake.  I'm not 
thrilled with the light steering, I'd not call it unstable, but it does 
require more attention than I would like.  I've got some pictures of it up
