I use silver down tube shifters with 9 speed and generally get great
results. Having said that let me offer some caveats.

My experience suggests:

friction shifting works better with good components; I use ultegra
cassettes, and conex chains. I have experienced problems with budget
equipment.

friction shifting works best with shorter cage derailers. My Ram with the
new Ultegra RD 6700 SS is the best shifting I have experienced in 35+years
of riding, including SIS brifters. My tandem with the RD 6700 triple rd
works pretty good too and I have had good enough shifting with a medium
cage Centaur; but by the time you get to really long cages, like Deore and
the campy long cage the shifting is just OK.

when friction shifting is off, it is easy to adjust; when index shifting is
off it usually turns into a project.

friction shifting has a learning curve and can add either interest or
challenge, depending on your state of mind.

I have 35 years of experience so my experience may not transfer to the next
generation.

I just came back from a very hilly 1 1/2 hour ride without a single missed
shift. Setup: Silver DT; White VBC crank & rings (44/30); Campy FD; Conex
908 chain; Ultegra HG 9 spd 11-28 cassette; Shimano RD 6700 RD. My
Ramboullet rocks!
