So this is subjective and my opinion and thoughts..... or questioning
thoughts...
I recently attempted half heartedly to sell a couple of bikes. Only
posted here and being 68cm I figured that since I was asking a fair to me
but not great deal on price it was a long shot on selling. Then I see a
68cm Orange RAM sell for 1300 or so bucks complete. My thought was this
guy is nuts... he should get that for frame alone. Then thought.. jerk
makes it harder to sell mine.. :) Anyway the way I have purchased and
looked at things are savings and value to me.
So if I get a frame and repaint it with total cost being roughly half of
new then I have essentially a new frame at 1/2 price. I tend to add 500 to
the cost of used frame in my mine for the repaint then take half of new and
go from there. shrug.
The build or builds I do usually range in the 1500 to 2000 on top of the
cost of the frame. Sometimes less sometimes more.. (like why my RAM will
never sell)
I also look at the 68cm frames as being rather special and worth more than
say a 56 cm or other common frame that fits 80% of the people in the world.
So tall people unless you want a "got no reason song" song written after
you quit giving bikes away.
Note to person selling me the 68cm Atlantis .. disregard as this will be a
good feeling sell and giving away is OK this time only. (if only he was
giving it away)
Anyway I would usually just buy new if savings aren't that great, but since
68cm frames are far and few between one must get what they can. Which
seems to be my mistaken belief. That because they are rare, no longer
made, no other alternatives that offer the same benefits unlike smaller
frames... surly for example... that tall folks would covet and jump at an
opportunity to grab them up.
Back to me buying an Atlantis I don't really need since I didn't sell any
of my other bikes. Does it really fit, I've convinced my self that my
perfect number of bikes is 3. (4 if you add in a unicycle or is that 3.5)
Tour Bike = Bombadil - Albatross - SON28 New Dyno on front - Phil on back
- Velocity Atlas Rims 2mm straight gage spokes.
Event Bike = RAM - 48cm Noodles, SONdelux Dyno on front -Grand Bois
HIgh Flange Rear on Velo Orange Raid Rims with 1.8 / 1.5 double butted -
Rene Herse front crank triple.. sweet for me.. only bitch.. I miss my
kickstand.
Day Bike = AHH (difference in the day bike and event bike is bigger
tires, fenders, racks and room for large saddle sack and camera
equipment... not to mention kickstand. Ideally replace this with the
Atlantis.
Built up with New SON28 and White
Industries rear with Velo Orange Raid Rims. Lots of love for this bike..
been a go to for a long time. Century rides etc. None of my bikes have
taken on as many roles as the AHH!
I've toured with it. Built it as my event
bike and now have it as my semi tour day bike for photography. The 700x37
Panaracer tires are really comfy. Just is always right there to fill in
for any role I choose to set it up as.
So the Atlantis really isn't needed.. it's wanted for bigger tires the AHH
just can't fit. But since no one will buy what I have .. I need a role
for the Atlantis. If it carries the load as well as the Bombadil I would
add my bombadil to the sell list to get back to 3 bikes.
Some combination to fit the Tour / Event / Day Bike (go to bike so to
speak)
My quickbeam rides alike a charm. I just don't ride it enough. I like to
ride my bikes not look at them or work on them all the time. They get
dirty and paint gets scratched. (thank god for ease or repainting)
So if I keep 5 bikes I need a unique role for each so they get ridden or
sell 2. Quickbeam of course. However I am not will to give them away..
(make sense?) (answer: not much of this post makes sense - drink or smoke
something and try again)
Just thinking the Panracer 700x37 feel doggie and thinking about going back
to JB's ... may have to use it for a 60 miler on Saturday and see if it's
me or if they are just really comfy and smooth thus feel slow or if they
are really slow.. I'll find out while chasing friends.
The large saddlesack is such a dream bag.
Though I have a Luxos B - I like my edelux just because it completely turns
off when not in use. The super nova lights and especially the tail light
have been a disappointment to me even though they look so sweet!
I wish I could get a 700x40 Grand Bois Tire like the 700x32's that are
700x30's. Kinda of like a 5 year prison sentence where you only serve 2..
why not just call a 2 a 2. (not slamming Grand Bois - others do it too..
just thunking along)
There are times that being shorter would be nice. The options out there
for you short folks is pretty freaking large. Well at least choice is
more. For me the only bike out there with good tire clearance and 68cm is
Rivendell. Gunnar makes a 68cm road frame.. just not as versatile.
Come to think of it, if the Atlantis is or does what I hope - Carry heavy
loads with the same stability and out of the saddle stability as the
Bombadil, keeps the quick feeling and versatility of the AHH while also
getting by as an event bike .. I could maybe get away with or live with a
single bike. In my mind though I have not ridden it yet or built it yet..
the Atlantis my be the most versatile. Or not.. why wouldn't a trimmed
down Bombadil do all of what the Atlantis will. is there a weight
difference of any significance. hmm.. dura ace eltronic shift componetry
with some carbon low count spoke wheels and 700x23's at 125psi on the
Bombadil frame ... would it be wrong on this race bike to have a third
water bottle cage if they are carbon fibre? 53/39 front 11/23 rear 11
speed. Could even paint a bright race car red with STP stickers. Hmm..
would STP work as chain lube?
I digress but have just remembered that riding or attempting to ride a
unicycle on rollers is not as good of an idea as it sounded at the time.
Hope everyone has a great day... I'll shut up now.
or quit typing as the case may be...
My leather bar tape is getting ugly.. maybe wrap over it with cloth..
leather which has been a hard feel should be a reasonable padding for cloth
tape.. for those gloveless like me.
Kelly
Out of his mind today working at not working while thinking about what bike
to ride tonight.
