Haven't used it with a laptop, but do have the Saddlesack Small. Your concerns about it hitting a frame or seatpost are valid. In my case, it bounces against the rear rack. If I were to do this, would want the computer in a protective sleeve of some sort to cushion any impact.
As to a sprung saddle cutting down on space, maybe. But that shouldn't be a concern for a laptop. Maybe a laptop with a six pack of beer on top. Lying on the side, of course. But not just the laptop.
