I just noticed that the spokes on the (six-speed) freewheel side of the rear wheel are all tighter than the spokes on the left... yet the wheel seems centered between the dropouts, and spins true. Does this seem right? Shouldn't spokes on both sides settle into some sense of balance? My tension-testing technique is crude - just pinching adjacent spokes where they cross, which tells me slacker on left side than on right.
