Good luck with the travels - I've attached some links I've seen which 
should give you a steer (DC Rainmaker is quite the traveller, as well as 
tech guy, an interesting blog to follow).

Personally, I've only "travelled with bike" once (Sydney to SF) and had no 
issues - the bike travelled fine in a large soft bag, and I was not charged 
any extra surcharge - I did have to check it separately, at the "oversize" 
check-in, and collect it at the oversize luggage area where it came out 
unscathed amidst surfboards and golf-bags. It seems from my reading that 
for North America domestic travel that "stealth" and protection from 
ham-fisted baggage handlers are the top two priorities.
