What Grant calls "rough around the edges... in a way that adds to its 
humility" (paraphrasing) is what my Italian family members call "malfatti." 
Taken literally, it means roughly-hewn, but in practice it's a loving term 
bestowed on something made by hand (wine, furniture, even tonight's dinner) 
that has, maybe, some rough edges but is in an overall sense delicious and 
attractive.

If the Cheviot has those qualities, then all the better. I think it's a 
beautiful bike.
