I don't quite understand the backlash to FS/WTB posts. One lesser (but significant) reason that I buy stuff from Rivendell with confidence is because I know that if it doesn't work out, I can sell it on here for a decent resale value. This encourages trying stuff out, which is inherently risky via mail order, and eventually gives others good deals for things they may just not consider at retail prices. All in all, I think this function promotes more happy riding and less buyer's remorse or nice stuff collecting dust.
