Doug: The laser rangefinders no doubt have most of the electronics
integrated into one chip, because I have seen the manual for such a
chip. Probably you would have to hack the interface to the display,
which as you say would be a pain. The alternative is a rangefinder
with an RS232 interface, but these cost around $600, at least from
what I've been able to find.
