Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for the advice, unfortunately,  
I do not believe Surplus Centre had plain beveled gears in the 2009  
catalogue. (Just reduction gearboxes)

Now I have yet another questions for the vets out there. As I said, I  
have two drill motors which have a very nice reversable speed control  
"throttle" which would be perfect for rc steering. The only issue is  
that the pot and switch for each one is of course in a little tiny  
black box connecting to the motor leads. How can I basically make  
these speed controllers remote-controlled?
