The intent is to either use metal sheets and tubes or a durable hard plastic
for the pivot piece. The volute spring is definitely going to be sturdier. I
really need to add welding to my skill set.

A faithful workable replica. Will you build your "nice" suspension pieces out
of metal sheets and tubes? I guess you could do that out of metal sheets if
you have a jigsaw.
You could add an extra thinner spring inside the shock absorber tube.

Attached are some pics of my M4A3 HVSS suspension. This is the prototype, so I
used less expensive materials and roughed it together to see if it will work.
The shock is made from ½" copper pipe with a 5/8" slip pipe. Inside are a
compression spring and two dowels cut to the right size. The HVS is fake,
using wood blocks to look like the spring and a film canister for the casing.
After testing, I will have to put compression springs in the HVS to support the
tank. I feel comfortable with the design and am getting ready to make my first
"nice" one. After that, I will make six more (I need a spare).

The wheels were cut out of laminated plywood using hole saws. The rubber is 2
¾" automotive hose. You can buy the stuff in about any diameter up to 5 or 6
inches and it is a straight tube. I just cut it on the bandsaw and it gives a
great fit (like a rubber band).

I have the lower hull cut out (will send more pics) and have ordered 4 drive
sprockets to arrive this week. I hope to make the tank expo this weekend, but
have no information on it.

Regards,

John Morgan
