Attached are two diagrams of generic leaf springs, made using multiple layers of spring steel. If you replace the flat bars by a couple pieces of piano wire (which is tempered spring steel) you can achieve the same effect with readily available materials. The exact number and size of wires needed depends on the desired load to be absorbed. If you place two such springs linearly behind the bumper, it will absorb loads regardless of the direction of impact.
