The cheapo one I played with worked out to about 100 feet with the receiver 
in direct sunlight. That toy system used a 1 cm plastic lens on the 
transmit side. Range could be extended with larger lenses.

The light is modulated at kHz frequencies. I never measured the modulation 
frequency, but I'm guessing it's 38 kHz, because that's a standard for 
remote control, and detector-demodulators are available in a 3-pin package 
for $2.
