i was about to call back to the wood shop when i remembered what today was and quickly hung up. I was going to see how he made out with what he was working on this weekend to see about the getting the tops for the PB's cut out. I'm sort of glad i didn't because i came up with another idea for them. originally i was just going to have him cut the tops out a sheet of wood, give them a coating of resin and glass so they where well sealed, then on the under side, attach about 4 tabs to it so the lids would just sit in place. i would have to mark them so they would match the housings and then mark a point on both so there would sit right as i know the wooden rings aren't 100% perfect on the inside and figure the tubes themselves could be out of square a bit also. but i came up with wanting to have them mounted to the tops permanently but make them hinge open. i thought this way there'd be no real chance of the lids being knocked off during battle. so i figure i'd have a 1-1/2" strip of wood cut for the front half of the lid and then what ever else i would need for the rest. secure it in place, then use a router with a chaser bit, this way the tops would be an exact match to the body of the PB. i'll try to reach him tomorrow and see if he has the time to do so. if he does i'll bring one this weekend for show if anyone would be interested in seeing it there, but i don't think it would be ready for battle (though Bill thinks the tube is more than strong enough with the 2 layers of glass on the outside) unless someone thinks otherwise. if so, i could see about getting rings cut out to be sectioned up and used for the view ports. i know i have some plexi or lexan around here i could try to attach for the view port.
