Here are my builds and reasons:
"Rocket Man": I wanted to build an armored car, and the HumVee had simply lines. "Bad Kitty": Joe had a nice aluminum lower hull for sale that was made for a Tiger. I toyed with the idea of building something different from it, but in the end decided it was better to stick with the original design. I'm not that big a Tiger fan, but they are boxy and pretty easy to build. Probably a good decision for my first tank. "Bofors Gun": I wanted an artillery piece with simulated handwheels for aiming. I also wanted something great looking that the GI-Joes could ride on. "Red Star": Still under construction. I've always thought the T-72 was one of the coolest looking tanks ever. Not so different from the JS-3. I wanted to try out a lofting technique for making a fiberglass mold for the rounded turret. - Doug From: rctankcombat@googlegroups.com [mailto:rctankcombat@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Derek Engelhaupt Sent: Thursday, August 23, 2012 6:04 PM To: rctankcombat@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [TANKS] New School vs Old School I may someday build a modern tank, but if I do I would like to do it as more of a scale model and not a paintball target. I chose the KV-2, the Sturmtiger and the M113 out of a personal love for all of the those vehicles and the fact that they were more simple designs to build. Modern tanks have all kinds of crazy angles and compound curves. I would prefer a modern tank over a WWII tank, but only if I could go all out on the modern tank. JMHO. It's hemispherical turret and crazy hull lines are iconicly Russian/Soviet. It really shocked the world with its debut. I think it has very aestheticly pleasing lines as well. Many might disagree with me on that point. Though difficult to model I imagine an Abrams or its peers might be equally if not more difficult and I just don't like the way most of them look. But this is my question. Why are the overwelming majority of our tanks of the WW2 era and not of the modern design? What drives most of us to model after older and inferior armor instead of the newer and superior breeds? I chose an M4 Sherman variant as my own despite the obvious flaws and limitations it possesed in history. I did so for a few reasons - It had simple lines - It was iconic American - It for some reason spoke to me in a way that no other had That may sound funny, but I wasnt really overly interested in the biggest and the baddest. I was drawn instead to the over worked and under powered machine that did by sheer determination. What are your thoughts? What made you choose yours?
