as for what to put into the tracks to hold it to the ground, i can think of 
 only to practical ways of doing so for this kind of device, both could 
have  issues with prolonged exposure to heat and flame.
 
the first would to have a wheel pattern like that if a tiger tank, have the 
 wheels stagger from front to back from one wheel to the next. this patern 
would  give you the most contact to the ground and less likely of the front 
lip of a  step going up between the wheels causing for a hard and bumpy ride 
or possibly  even getting somewhat stuck.
 
the other idea is to use something like delron gliders in place of the  
wheels as this would give a long, flat surface with no chance of getting hung 
up  on the step lip.
 
again, both are prone to heat and flame damage after a period of  exposure.
