I ended up using a small stepper with a gearhead. A custom ring gear would have been a great alternative, too !
I use a Pololu driver with an adjustable drive current and an enable/disable line that I can toggle via an I/O line. So, I can power the driver off when I want to. My plan is to keep the driver current at a minimum. Not only will that minimize the battery drain, but it will allow the turret to rotate freely when Joe runs into me. :) - Doug -----Original Message----- From: rctankcombat@googlegroups.com [mailto:rctankcombat@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sam D'Haene Sent: Tuesday, January 19, 2016 7:39 AM To: R/C Tank Combat <rctankcombat@googlegroups.com> Subject: [TANKS] stepper motors Hi Doug, Stepper motors have very high torque rates and cheap drivers. But a constant current draw makes them very unefficient in a mobile applicaltion. A dc motor (without closed loop control) doesn't require power at standstill. A steppermotor always draw full (or half current) to generate the holding torque. Sam -- -- You are currently subscribed to the "R/C Tank Combat" group.
