The "v" shapes (chevrons) are used to designate which platoon the tank belongs to on US vehicles. May be used for the same function in the Israeli Army. The brits have used the chevrons when they are in joint ops with US forces. Friend or foe is usually accomplished by CIP (slatted combat identification panel on the sides of the tank or turret).
