Monday, May 14, 2007 I think the reason for using a controlled vocabulary was not for sharing data among libraries but to bring together (aka "collocate") items with of an author who uses a variety of names or forms of a name (Twain vs. Clemons), or on a subject whose name varies (death penalty vs. capital punishment. Cf. "2. To show what the library has (D) by a given author [or] (E) on a given subject."Cutter, Rules for a dictionary catalog, 4th ed, 1904, p.12.
