I say that you record the title, the edition statement from the
piece, the number of pages, illustrations, size, the date of
publication, the publisher.
What happened to statement of responsibility, and place of
publication? What's wrong with the selection and order of ISBD?
Damned hard to work with algorithmically. Then again, if you want to
replace computers with thousands of humans who take in queries and read
through and understand library catalog data, and then give a response,
ok, do that. Personally, I'm trying to answer questions posed to
computer systems.
Does "James Morris" vs. "Jan Morris" on the title page make it a
different edition, even if otherwise a reprint from the same type
image? If you don't record that distinction, how could you make an
informed decision?
I actually don't care. I don't care if it's a different edition, and I
don't think most users do either. (With the possible exception of the
rare book researcher.)
Why are we reinventing the wheel?
We aren't. We are creating something new, something different. It might
not even be round. And I suspect you won't like it. But that's what I'm
working on.
