The question then becomes whether there is a need to differentiate between brackets used with cataloger interpolations versus those transcribed from the source. In MARC--short of developing a MARC-specific code or punctuated phrase of some kind, e.g., <--> or some such--there is no way to distinguish one from another.
The same thing can be said about ellipses and the mark of omission (the space on either side of the latter notwithstanding). -- Mark K.
