I don't think anyone has mentioned the GMD "manuscript" in this particular thread. I don't know how many libraries used "manuscript" as a GMD; LC did not, which may have discouraged its use. "Manuscript" has no equivalent value in the 336-338 trio; it is treated as a method of production, which in effect buries it in the physical description area.
Using an icon or text string based on leader type is one option, though this won't help with searching. Another option would be to record the fact in the 245$k. This is what APPM (Archives, Personal Papers, and Manuscripts) recommended; it is also what is recommended in the current draft of Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Manuscripts).

Of course, there's a more direct mapping from 337 to the GMD for some of these particular cases: 337 audio -- GMD sound recording 337 computer -- GMD electronic resource 337 microform -- GMD microform 337 video -- GMD videorecording The projected media are problematic in that some are influenced by the Content Type and mapped to the GMD "motion picture" and some 338 projected media carriers are mapped directly to non-general GMDs such as filmstrip or transparency. This why the GMD is a misleading concept as it wobbles incoherently from content terms to general terms related to intermediation devices to very specific carrier terms. The unmediated media such as cards, sheets, and volumes ignore the main problem-- these can be mapped to a large number of possible GMDs, such as cartographic material for atlases, still images of many kinds (photographs, postcards), and music for notated music. The GMDs for [text], [cartographic material] and [music] map to the Content Type in 336. Any of these are superseded by GMDs for electronic resources or microform if the underlying carrier changes, which again points to the inconsistent and flawed logic of the GMDs.
