After the *long* discussion (dispute?) amongst us occasioned by
whether "cm" is a symbol or abbreviation, SLC is adopting the
following policy concening RDA/MARC21 variable field end punctuation:

PUNCTUATION

[End all descriptive variable fields with final punctuation (e.g.,
period, hyphen, closing parenthesi). including 246 and 300, whether
300 followed by 490 or not, and whether one considers "cm" a symbol or
an abbreviation. Never double punctuate, e.g., "Second ed.."]

P.S. We've been using a period on 246 for some time, so the resulting
notes will have a period. Would that everyone would adopt this simple
and easy solution, and rejected the ISBD falacy that the period
introduces the next field.
