I use your number 2 option. It seems the more logical way in the spirit of RDA. I don't think we should ignore unnumbered pages in a resource. At this point, a standardized way of indicating this situation (unnumbered pages in a resource) is evolving and should become part of a "best practices" scenario.

RDA says: If the pages, etc., are numbered as part of a larger sequence (e.g., as part of the continuous paging for a multivolume resource), record the first and last numbers of the pages, etc., preceded by the appropriate term. The problem is that the first page of my volume is unnumbered. Under AACR2 I would have enclosed the unnumbered page in brackets ( [1], p. 343-345). Because the first page is my preferred source of information and it would help account for first page when constructing its citation (thinking of user), I have 3 possible ways of inputting the extent. Pages are numbered 343-520, but it starts on page 342 which is unnumbered. I have 3 options: (1) pages 342-520 --- Ignore unnumbered page, (2) 1 unnumbered page, pages 343-520 -- <<I think this is the correct way>> (3) pages 343-520 -- record unnumbered page as part of sequence. Can someone tell me if I'm applying the rule correctly if I use option #2 above? I've included the text of RDA 3.4.5.3.1--instructions on how to record numbered and unnumbered sequences--below. 3.4.5.3.1 Numbered and Unnumbered Sequences If the resource consists of both numbered and unnumbered sequences of pages, leaves, or columns, disregard the unnumbered sequences, unless: a) an unnumbered sequence constitutes a substantial part of the resource (see also 3.4.5.8[cid:image001.png@01CE3B4F.B5E2D500]<http://access.rdatoolkit.org/document.php?id=rdachp3&target=rda3-2873#rda3-2873>) or b) an unnumbered sequence includes pages, etc., that are referred to in a note. Exception Early printed resources. For early printed resources, record unnumbered sequences of pages, leaves, or columns. EXAMPLE 12 unnumbered pages, 72 pages, 10 unnumbered pages, 48 pages, 6 unnumbered pages, 228 pages, 16 unnumbered pages 91 leaves, 1 unnumbered leaf Last leaf blank When recording a sequence of unnumbered pages, etc., record: either a) the exact number (if the number is readily ascertainable) followed by unnumbered pages, etc. or b) an estimated number preceded by approximately or c) unnumbered sequence of pages, etc. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MarilĂș Vallejo Head, Books & Maps Cataloging Unit Metadata Services Department 9500 Gilman Dr. #0175K || La Jolla, CA 92093-0175 Phone: 858-822-3891 || fax 858-822-0349 || email mvall...@ucsd.edu<mailto:mvall...@ucsd.edu> [cid:image002.png@01CE3B4F.B5E2D500] P Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail.
