PS. Sorry, I should have said more explicitly, the fact that the contributions by different authors and that there is clearly a "main" text is something we have decided to ignore at the Courtauld. As long as the texts have named authors - i.e. are not anonymous captions, bibliographies etc. - we would ignore their uneven lengths when making the compilation decision.
It will be really interesting to see how others are treating these types of publications. This matter has generated a lot of variation in our practice records and a lot of debate! To help us, we devised a flowchart for deciding whether something was a compilation or instead a work by a single author or artist. In the case you describe, if I have understood correctly, we would treat it as a compilation. Even if the item contained reproductions of the artworks of a single artist, the presence of multiple essays/texts means we would rule out the artist as the creator. From here, as the separate authors are named in different sections of the book, we would consider it a "normal" compilation. So, we do make a case-by-case decision, but use our flowchart to guide us. We hope that in the coming months, conventions for cataloguing exhibition catalogues in RDA will emerge, so we fully expect to change our flowchart and practices accordingly in the future. However, for now, it is saving a lot of time and agony! Both the main and the minor components are about the same artist, exhibition, or movement, so the minor components are freestanding and do not relate to the main component as editorial material or commentary. Would you treat such resources as compilations or as single works by the creators of the main texts? Or would you decide case-by-case, depending on the value of the minor components?
