I figured I might as well go back and start from scratch, so I uninstalled
my python, librsync, and rdiff-backup ports and installed newer versions
following the instructions on the rdiff-backup Wiki.  The server is now up
and running.  Thanks for your help!

Mark,

It can't find your installation of librsync. Do you have it installed? I
think there are Mac install instructions in the Wiki.
