I did this a while back (Postgres 9.0.3).

Download the source and there is an excellent INSTALL txt file in the
tar file with all the instructions.

Here is the "short version" (head -50 INSTALL)

./configure
gmake
su
gmake install
adduser postgres
mkdir /usr/local/pgsql/data
chown postgres /usr/local/pgsql/data
su - postgres
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /usr/local/pgsql/data
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/postgres -D /usr/local/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1 &
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb test
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test

... I still think googling it would have been faster ...
